What Jaylen Brown said about participating in the Slam Dunk Contest

Even though Jaylen Brown can compile a several-minute-long montage of the highlight dunks he’s made over his career, his willingness to participate in this year’s Slam Dunk Contest is a bit of a surprise.

The Celtics star will be the first be the first player to participate in the Slam Dunk Contest and the All-Star Game on the same weekend since DeAndre Jordan did it in 2017. Brown had put off possibly participating in the marquee event in the past, but the 27-year-old felt that this is the right time to do it.

“I think I’m in my athletic prime,” Brown told reporters following the Celtics’ win on why he decided to participate in the event. “I think it’ll be fun. I wish more top players/athletes, decided to compete in the Dunk Contest. I grew up watching that and that’s what I love.

“So, hopefully, that comes back around.”

Brown remarked that this will be the first time that he’s been a part of any official dunk contest, saying he didn’t believe he participated in an organized one during his high school days. He didn’t reveal what he’ll exactly do in the competition, but he teased that an All-Star teammate could be involved.

“I may or may not use props,” Brown said. “I got about six in the chamber or whatever. We’ll see which ones I end up going with, but definitely be on the look for [Jayson Tatum] to make an appearance on it. Definitely want to use the All-Star weekend, the fun activities to be able to build with your teammates and share some of that. If JT is available, for sure it will be fun.”

Tatum volunteered to be a part of Brown’s routine at the Slam Dunk Contest earlier in the week, saying he “would be open to it” as he was happy to see his teammate participate in it.

“I think it would be great for him to participate in it, kind of bring back that star power to the dunk contest that we want to see,” Tatum told reporters Wednesday. “All the big name guys be in it, that’s how I grew up watching it. So, I would love for him to be in it, and I would love for him to win, and I think it would be exciting to see.”

Brown is looking to become the third Celtics player to win the Slam Dunk Contest in the event’s history. Dee Brown, who also wore No. 7, was the first, winning in 1991 with his no-look dunk being his signature moment. Gerald Green became the Celtics player to win it 16 years later, paying homage to Brown with one of his dunks.

In recent years, props have become prevalent in the contest as players try to find unique ways to dunk the ball. Brown admitted that’s the biggest difficulty he faces, but he thinks he can overcome it.

“Everything has been done,” Brown said. “I think just my approach is just to have fun with it and put my own little style, my own little swag on things. Everything has been done, but I feel like I bring a uniqueness. So I plan on putting my own style and bringing my own swag to it and just go from there.”
