Kim Kardashian recently tried to buy a bible gifted to OJ Simpson by her late father Robert Kardashian Sr. but was rebuffed by his estate executor.
Robert was not only one of OJ’s closest friends, but was also part of his defense team during the infamous trial for the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman in 1994. The former NFL star was acquitted of the murder but was found guilty in a civil trial and ordered to pay restitution to Nicole and Ron’s families.
Since OJ died last April, his estate is being auctioned off to pay off his debts. Kim offered $15,000 for the heirloom.
The Kardashian family patriarch passed away in September 2003 from esophageal cancer when the future reality star was just 22 years old. She has credited him as her inspiration for pursuing a legal career.
The reality star once paid almost $200k for a necklace owned by Princess Diana
The bible in question was inscribed with her late father’s name and featured a handwritten note addressed to OJ dated June 18, 1994 – the day after he was arrested and charged for murder.
“O.J., this book will help,” the note reads. “God loves and he will speak to you with his words. Read this book everyday. God has a definite plan for your life. You are his child and he will use you again. I love you and God loves you.”
The personalized item was in the process of being auctioned off by Goldin Auctions. Her offer was reportedly rejected because, according to OJ’s estate executor Malcolm LaVergne, it would cost around the same amount in legal fees to get the proper paperwork to sell the item outside the auction.
He explains: “The amount is why I had no choice, because why would I spend $15,000 of estate money — why would I spend $15,000 in attorney’s fees — to sell it to Kim for $15,000. That’s a zero-sum game. That’s a bad business model. If Kim had offered $150,000 for it, we would’ve been in court getting this approved outside of the auction.”
People on social media were quick to point out the surprisingly low offer made for an item of such high sentimental value, with one Redditor writing: “Isn’t she a billionaire? What a lowball offer.”
Others echoed with comments like: “I’m sure this means a lot to her, being that it was from her dad and that they were close with the Simpson family. But being who she is, $15,000 is rather low” and “$15k is like me throwing a penny at someone at a yardsale who’s asking for $100.”
In 2023, Kim bought Princess Diana’s purple Attallah cross necklace at auction for almost $200,000 and a jacket once owned by Michael Jackson in 2019 for over $65,000 as a gift for her then-6-year-old daughter North.
“Kim can bid on it online,” the executor added. With the leading bid sitting at $9,800, he says: “She may even get it cheaper than the 15 grand, so who knows.”
